Meta Quest 2/3 reset to factory settings

The Meta Quest 2 is slowly becoming obsolete for me, as we now have two Quest 3 headsets available here. For this reason, our older kids get the Quest 2 VR glasses. However, for the handover I would like to remove my account from the glasses so that the new owners can set up the glasses with their own account.

Anyone selling their Meta Quest 2 or 3 is also strongly advised to reset the glasses to factory settings so that all private data and access is removed from the device.

If you want to pass on or sell the Meta Quest 2 or 3 VR glasses, you should definitely reset them to factory settings.

Instructions: Reset via the Meta Quest app

To perform a reset on a Quest 2 or 3, you have to switch on the VR glasses and, ideally, connect them to a power supply. The actual steps are then carried out on the smartphone to which this headset is connected. In my case it is my iPhone.

  1. Open the meta app on the linked iPhone/smartphone.
  2. At the bottom right of the app click “Menu”.
  3. In the menu overview click on “Devices”.
  4. Now select the corresponding quest.
  5. Select “Headset Settings” below.
  6. And now select Reset.
With these two buttons you can access a special menu in Quest 2, which you can also use to reset the glasses (photos: Sir Apfelot).

Here you can see the menu in the Quest 2, which you can use to reset the glasses without the app. Unfortunately it was a bit difficult to photograph.

Instructions: Reset via Quest 2/3 itself

I just had to do this on my Quest 2 because the “Headset Settings” area was not available in the instructions above. It was grayed out and could not be selected. I haven't figured out why. You can also reset the VR glasses without the app using the following method:

  1. Put on glasses and shut down.
  2. If it is off, press the power button and the volume down button at the same time (the minus symbol is on it).
  3. After a second or two you will come to a menu where you can choose “Factory Reset” (and other options).
  4. Use the volume buttons to move to “Factory Reset” in the menu and then confirm with the power button.
  5. On the following page you have to confirm again that you want to delete everything.

In these two ways you can completely delete Meta Quest 2 or 3 so that you can then sell or give it away. I think using the app can sometimes cause problems if, for example, the battery level is too low. But then the route via the glasses themselves definitely works. This ultimately led to success for me too.

However, I still have to figure out how to get the reset glasses out of my Meta Quest app. But that will be a different guide. 😊
