Chapter in this post:
Websites and their place on the internet are no mystery. Sure, you mainly see the "front end", i.e. the graphically prepared front, and at first glance you don't know what it looks like in the background. But that doesn't mean that you can't just get this insight - with, for example SimilarWeb. Do you want to see whether the site is safe, whether there is an app for it, what rank it has globally, in your country or in your own category? Then SimilarWeb.com is a good place to go. There is a free traffic overview, an overview of how people get to the page, where the most links on the page, and a lot more information.

SimilarWeb is a website and app data search engine. You can use it to read traffic, interactions, links, similar pages and other information - even free of charge and without registration.
Search and find a website with SimilarWeb.com - for example https://www.sir-apfelot.de - then you will be shown some basic information at the beginning. If we stick to this blog as an example, we will see a brief description of the blog content, a note on related apps, a view of the page as a mobile and desktop screenshot and the note “This website is safe. No threads detected. ". There is also a note that the following values provide an overview of the last month that has passed (currently June 2021, as of July 19, 2021).
With regard to websites, “traffic” describes the flow of users that can be recorded for the site and its content. In addition to the pure number of views, other values are also included: where do the visitors come from, how long do they stay on the page, how many sub-pages they look at on average, what is the bounce rate - and so on. SimilarWeb offers all of this information for free and without registration. Simply enter a page in the search bar and then call up the relevant information. So you can keep an eye on your own or someone else's pages and compare them.
Traffic is important when evaluating a website. The website traffic shows how many visitors there were, where they came from, how long they stayed and how many pages they viewed. SimilarWeb offers extensive information on this.
The ranking plays an important role both when running your own website and when keeping an eye on the competition. How well are you positioned in a global, regional and thematic comparison? And what is the trend, is it on an upward path or is it going downhill? In both cases, work should of course be put into the page to make it (even) better. You can tell whether the work is worthwhile if you regularly keep an eye on the ranking. And here, too, it can be worthwhile to compare your own side with others. Especially if you create similar content or take a similar approach with other content.
In addition to the data mentioned and shown, which you can call up on a website via SimilarWeb, there is some more. For example, on the subject of social media and the corresponding interaction. Competitor pages are also shown. Pages like MacUser, iFun, MacWelt, Apfeltalk, MacLife, MacTechNews, Appdanger and so on are named as similar pages for Sir Apfelot. So not bad company.
These are all SimilarWeb categories, which you can reach by scrolling or click in the selection on the left of the page to see the individual data:

By using SimilarWeb for free, you can see three months of web traffic data. There is one month of data for the mobile app of a site. It is also pointed out that there are only “5 results per metric”, whatever that means. There is a lot more in the PRO program. For example, web traffic data from three years, app data from 28 months, a keyword analysis, an industry analysis and much more. Nothing is said about the price, companies should obtain an individual offer. This information is available on the SimilarWeb page under the menu item "Prices".
You can use SimilarWeb for free and without registration, or you can create a free account. Your company has the option of getting more performance for an individual price.
SimilarWeb already offers extensive information with the free offer that can be used without registration. If you just want to see whether a website, blog, shop or the like is trustworthy, you can find some evidence for or against it here. If you want to keep an eye on and improve professional and perhaps also commercial websites, you might be interested in the paid PRO subscription. This also makes it possible to not only display a report for the page on the web, but also to output it as a PDF. This makes it easier to save and share analyzes. What do you think of that? Do you run a website that you want to be placed in search engines as well as possible? Feel free to leave a comment on the topic!
After graduating from high school, Johannes completed an apprenticeship as a business assistant specializing in foreign languages. But then he decided to research and write, which resulted in his independence. For several years he has been working for Sir Apfelot, among others. His articles include product introductions, news, manuals, video games, consoles, and more. He follows Apple keynotes live via stream.
