Wahl-O-Mat for the 2024 European elections is ready

The European Parliament will be elected on June 9, 2024. In order to find out in the run-up to the so-called European elections which election programs best suit your own preferences, you can either study them all or use the Wahl-O-Mat. The voting decision aid, which was first made available in 2002, can be used in the current version via website and as an app.

You can find the website with this link. The app is available for iPhone, iPad and Macs with M-Chip in the App Store. In addition to the European elections, there are also other elections coming up in some federal states in June, for example for district councils or local councils.

Sale at Gravis: discounts until June 15, 2024

Who already reported in March, the German Apple retailer Gravis is closing its doors. Gravis Computervertriebsgesellschaft mbH, founded in 1986, is no longer profitable and is therefore holding a fire sale. In addition to the branches, the corresponding discounts are also available online in the Gravis web shop.

The inventory sale runs until June 15th. All outstanding work will be completed by June 30th before the gates finally close on July 1st. There is more about this in the official press release of the parent company freenet.

6G mobile communications: Test in Japan brings data rate of 100 GBit/s

The 5G mobile communications standard has not been in operation for very long and is not yet widely available. But that doesn't stop experts researching mobile communications from working on the next generation. According to some media reports, there has now been a breakthrough in the implementation of 6G in Japan.

This made it possible to send data at up to 100 Gbit/s, i.e. up to 12,5 GB per second. In addition to streaming very high-resolution films, latency-free streaming of video games and the online use of VR offerings, this data load is primarily for complex IoT networks and other industrial use cases (Which).

Synchronous: Neuralink competitor wants to explore further fields of application

In the last few months there have been repeated reports about Musk's company Neuralink. This was the first time a human-computer interface could be transplanted into a brain. Afterwards there were repeated updates about the patient's career - about here. But Neuralink is not the only company that offers such solutions.

As has now been announced by its competitor Synchron, it no longer only wants to focus on solutions for paralysis patients, but also develop solutions for epilepsy and Parkinson's. This should be made possible by a new wave of investment in the industry. Synchronously, his technology does not involve brain surgery, but rather via a probe that is inserted through the jugular vein (Which).

Apple's AI plans: Possibly hybrid system of local and server-side AI

WWDC10 starts on June 24th with the presentation of Apple's new operating systems for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Co. Some AI functions and possibly new apps with generative artificial intelligence are expected. There are many indications that Apple wants to run the necessary models directly on the end devices.

However, for older hardware that is not designed for AI applications, a server-side offer could also be presented that can only be used via an internet connection. This should run on servers that use chips that... M2Ultra equal. We'll know exactly what will be usable by upgrading to iOS 18, macOS 15 and Co. in a month (Which).

Tim Cook's successor: John Ternus is said to be the best candidate

Tim Cook took over the role of Apple CEO from Steve Jobs in 2011. After 13 years, the question of his successor is increasingly arising. Already in 2021 it was rumored that he will retire in 2025, which doesn't leave much time for an answer. Tim Cook also confirmed that there are already some plans internally in November 2023.

The name John Ternus is said to be heard again and again from Apple-related and internal sources. He has been employed at Apple since 2001 and is currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering. He increasingly appears during product presentations and as a company representative in the media. For some, these are clear indications (Which).

“Crush!” commercial for the iPad Pro: criticism and parallels

Apple presented its new iPad Pro on Tuesday with, among other things, the approximately one-minute spot “Crush!” This uses a large hydraulic press to compress art, sculptures, paint, an arcade game machine, instruments, decorations, teaching materials and much more. After lifting the press, the iPad Pro will appear. The aim is to show that everything possible can be created and consumed with the device.

However, according to some media reports, there was criticism because the commercial could also be understood to mean that all the physical creative, learning and fun objects should be replaced by a soulless display with virtual display content. That's why Apple will probably refrain from using the spot on television (Which).

What I find much more interesting, however, is the similarity of the spot to advertisements, which also presented the above-described idea of summarized content or possible uses using a press. Examples include the advertising for the LG KC910 Renoir digital camera from 2008. In direct comparison, Apple's “Crush!” spot could definitely be seen as an uninspired LG copy. Previously, there was a similar concept in advertising for the first Pokémon game for the Game Boy in 1999. A bus full of Pokémon was squeezed together to create a Game Boy.
