Sir Apfelot newsreel week 44, 2022

The year is slowly coming to an end, Advent is not far off. And as we start November, I actually have a Sir Apfelot newsreel in my luggage for you (by the way, a format that will soon be celebrating its fifth anniversary). In this I will show you which Apple and tech news I noticed in calendar week 44 of the year 2022. Among other things, the following reports are included: Pantone colors in Adobe apps subject to a fee, EU wants to make real-time transfers the norm, statistics on the use of German freemailers, Twitter vs. Mastodon, new subscription model from Netflix and more.

Also included in the Sir Apfelot newsreel for calendar week 44 of 2022: Pantone color books from Adobe only by subscription, EU wants real-time transfers and regulated "gatekeepers", Musk-Twitter vs. Mastodon, Netflix with advertising subscription, Apple TV 4K available today, and more!

Pantone colors in Adobe apps: Soon only by subscription

Those who use Photoshop or other apps for image editing, design and color applications from Adobe and who rely on the Pantone color palettes are facing big changes. Already in current versions of the Adobe apps, the Pantone colors are removed and replaced with black (Which). This is due to a new licensing of the color samples by the US company that has been issuing the standards and numbering for printing colors since the 1960s. From December 2022 there will only be three Pantone color books in Adobe Color - all others must be booked with a license via a corresponding plug-in. That will cost $21 a month. There are more details at Adobe.

EU plans: Real-time transfer to become the norm

The European Commission plans to make real-time transfers the norm. Payments made within the EU should not take several days, but should arrive in the target account in the next minute. This is done, among other things, by means of two Infographics on Twitter communicates. In addition to the new plans, the current status is also shown: only 11% of all money transfers in euros are currently being transmitted in real time. And this despite the fact that all bank transactions are already digital and therefore there is actually no reason not to carry out transfers directly. There is more information and advantages of the new plans on the infographics, take a look.

Further EU plans: law on digital markets aims at Apple and Co.

On European Commission website there are other interesting plans to discover this week that also have something to do with the technology world. The “Act on Digital Markets”, which came into force on November 1, is aimed at so-called gatekeepers. This refers to online platforms that impose certain limits on third-party providers, put their own offers in the foreground and / or track end users outside of their platform in an effective advertising manner. In short, the law could mean Apple has to make concessions on sideloading on iPhone and iMessage on Android. In addition, pre-installed apps on the devices must be able to be uninstalled. More than half use GMX and WEB.de for e-mails

The two freemailers GMX and WEB.de, which belong to 1&1 Mail & Media GmbH, commissioned a survey, after which they counted a total of 52,1% of the users. GMX is used the most by 25,7%, and WEB.de is preferred by 26,4%. This is followed by Gmail with 15,4%, T-Online with 8,6% and, with smaller percentages, Freenet, Yahoo, AOL, 1&1 and “Other” with a total of 6,4%. In the breakdown of other mail providers, iCloud comes in at 1,3%. Among those surveyed, 46,4% of the respondents used e-mails via the provider's app and 37,9% via the (pre-installed) smartphone app. Due to the possibility of multiple mentions, the use of a web browser also came to 36,2%. All data and overviews of the survey can be found in the GMX press release on this.

More negative headlines about Elon Musk's Twitter

Elon Musk has himself employed as CEO of Twitter, dismissed several executives and also ordered the termination of a four-digit number of employees. If that's not a reason to ditch the blue twitter app, then perhaps the Tesla guy's shifted worldview reflected in the new verification plans. Because in order to make verification on Twitter "fairer", the blue ticks on the profile name should in future be awarded against payment. So instead of a review process, the wallet should now decide whether, in the eyes of Twitter, you are a real person with an online presence that is worthy of protection. That takes the whole thing ad absurdum. Not least because $20 per month (or $8 per month for “Twitter Blue”) is under discussion. Sources: 1, 2, 3

Migration to Mastodon: heise offers FAQ

In my circle of acquaintances, I see how people who use Twitter privately are turning away from the platform more and more. The decentralized platform Mastodon, managed by instances, is being discussed more and more as the best alternative these days. Since I haven't dealt with it sufficiently yet, I can't give you any instructions or tips of my own. But if you want to switch from Twitter (or other questionable platforms like Facebook), then heise online could be your guide. Via this link you will find the article “FAQ: How does the decentralized Twitter alternative Mastodon work?”.

Netflix: Fewer titles in the promotional subscription and restriction on Apple TV

Netflix's ad-supported subscription also launched this week. This is available for EUR 4,99 and includes advertising in addition to the films and series that can be streamed. The further financing of the offer is thus realized. There is also the basic, the standard and the premium subscription - each for 7,99 euros, 12,99 euros or 17,99 euros. The price and the advertising are not the only differences in the "Basic subscription with advertising". Because with this you can not download media for offline playback and there are also fewer available. Like JustWatch shows, there are 5.449 films and series compared to the 6.966 titles in the other three subscriptions. Like iFun shows, the new advertising subscription is not yet supported on the Apple TV.
