[Solved] Free Mac video player with audio waveform

video player featured image

I record my videos for YouTube with a Sony camera (Sony ZV-E1) and an external microphone connected to an audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) is connected to the Mac.

The software (Ecamm Live) takes both signals and uses them to record a video with sound and image - the only catch is that the sound is there "earlier" than the audio.

Audio delay correction

Luckily, Ecamm offers an option to delay the audio by a certain amount of frames to get it to fit again.

To find out how many frames to enter, I made a video and clapped my hands. Then I wanted to look in the video player to see how many frames there were between “hands together” and “audio rash”.

You can use the QuickTime player to display the audio waveform (Photo: Sir Apfelot).

QuickTime Player is the solution

My Google search for a “video player with audio waveform” ended relatively quickly with a forum where someone said that the good old one QuickTime Player everything is what you need.

In order to see the audio curves, you have to do the following:

  1. Open video in QuickTime player
  2. View → Show clips (cmd + E)
  3. Appearance → Show Audio (cmd + U)

This means you also have the audio curve in the video image below and can see when and whether an audio deflection occurs that matches the video image. In my case the delay was quite noticeable.

I found out that I have to enter exactly 5 frames in the audio delay so that the picture and sound match again during the Ecamm recording.

If you have another use for this audio waveform in QuickTime Player, please leave a comment. I am excited.
