Chapter in this post:
In 2020, Stiftung Warentest took a close look at air purifiers from the brands Beurer, De Longhi, Soehnle, Rowenta, Dyson, Honeywell and Philips ( ). The three best air purifiers in the test field were then tested again specifically for their effectiveness against corona viruses in 2021 ( ). I would like to briefly present these results to you here.
It is necessary to state in advance that the following criteria are included in the main grade of the evaluator air cleaner included:
The air purification effect is the most important property with 60% of the overall rating, but unfortunately none of the devices achieved a "good" rating here. The reason for this is, for example, with the test winner "Philips AC2889 / 10“That it only filters formaldehyde sufficiently well. In contrast, it filters pollen and cigarette smoke well.
In order to test how the air purifiers are suitable for filtering corona viruses from the room air, the following tests were carried out:
Basically you can recommend the top 3, but it is important to know their weaknesses. For this reason I would like to briefly introduce all three - starting with the test winner.
The Philips AC2889 / 10 does best in the test because it filters smoke and pollen well and its filter ages more slowly than that of its competitors.
By the way, on the Amazon product page of the air purifier, people repeatedly write when asked that an air purifier from Newentor is much cheaper and better. This is a commercial and can safely be ignored.
Technical details about the Philips:
The Soehnle Airfresh Clean Connect 500 is good for pollen and the best filter in the test for formaldehyde. Only with cigarette smoke did it break in after about 100 cigarettes and only moderately filter the smoke.
Technical details about the Soehnle:
The Rowenta PU6080 Intense Pure Air Connect is good at filtering pollen and smoke. In terms of smoke reduction, it actually has the best effect in the entire test field. However, the situation is different with formaldehyde, because the filter performance is only weak here.
Technical details about the Rowenta:
The testers from Stiftung Warentest make it clear right from the start that an air purifier cannot protect against corona infection. If two people sit across from each other less than 1,5 meters apart in the room, there is no air purifier that can help here.
The most sensible use is therefore that you want to get the room halfway free of the aerosols after a visit and thus reduce the risk of infection. However, it must be noted here that cross ventilation (opening two opposite windows in the room completely for 5 minutes) is significantly more effective than an air purifier.
From my point of view, air purifiers are therefore only useful in relation to Corona in windowless, not too large rooms.
On the other hand, they are very suitable for kitchen smells, smoke or pollen. We use ours Lifubide X600 (A top device by the way!) for example in the bedroom in summer and otherwise in the kitchen, as we don't have an extractor hood.
