iPad won't show keyboard - here are the solutions
Today I got a request from a relative with some photos of an iPad with Safari open. At first I wasn't sure what it was about, but then the next message came:
The iPad no longer shows me a keyboard.
I admit that I haven't had the problem yet, but a call to the appropriate Apple support page gave me two possible causes and solutions. For those who don't want to read a lot: A restart solved the problem in our case and the iPad redisplayed the keyboard.

1. The iPad needs a restart
In the first case I couldn't find a real cause. It seems that the iPad sometimes freezes and just forgets to show the keyboard. This was the case for many users in the Apple forum after they installed an iOS or iPadOS update. In my case, however, it was a brand new iPad 10 with iPadOS 16.3.1 - not a version that you would expect to have teething problems. Still, the restart helped for us. Here's a quick jaunt on how to restart iPad because I had to look it up myself:
- iPad without home button (all current models) → Press and hold the top button and one of the volume buttons at the same time, then drag the slider.
- iPad with home button → Hold the top button and then move the slider.

2. A real keyboard or mouse is connected to the iPad
If an iPad doesn't show an onscreen keyboard, it could also be because a Bluetooth keyboard was connected at some point and automatically reconnected to the iPad because it was nearby. According to one user, after pairing a Logitech mouse with the iPad, the onscreen keyboard stopped appearing on them. You can quickly check whether this is the reason by going to the control center Turn off the Bluetooth temporarily and see if a keyboard is now displayed on a text input window.
Here you can see where the Bluetooth connection is deactivated in the control center. If Bluetooth is not activated and the on-screen keyboard still does not appear, then it is definitely not a Bluetooth keyboard.
If you want to unpair a connected keyboard from the iPad, you can do this under Settings → Bluetooth.

Remap game controllers to Mac, iPad, Apple TV and iPhone
Did you know that since the current Apple operating systems, you no longer need an additional app to remap game controllers or gamepads? So if you want to change the button assignment on a controller, you can do it directly in the settings of Mac, iPad, Apple TV and iPhone. I myself was only reminded of this again today – while researching the 8BitDo controllers for Apple devices. The new settings in macOS, iPadOS, tvOS and iOS make apps like Joystick mapper obsolete, right? I tried it out for you on the Mac and on the iPhone to see if this is the case. Since the operating systems for iPhone, Mac, iPad and Apple TV released in 2022, you can remap the buttons of gaming controllers on these devices without additional software.

Remap controller buttons on Apple Mac
If you want to remap the buttons, sticks and knobs of a gamepad on the Apple Mac, then the computer must have the operating system macOS 13 Adventure (or newer) installed. In order to define a new controller key assignment in the settings, you must first pair the game controller, i.e. connect it via Bluetooth or connect it by cable. Only then does the required menu item appear. And you can find it like this:
1. Click on the top left of the menu bar Apple logo ()

4. Select the gamepad you want to remap
5. Under the "Profiles" overview, click the plus icon (+)
Once you have reached the settings window described and shown, you can give the new profile a name, e.g. B. "Xbox layout", "PlayStation layout", "Settings for child 1", "Settings for app xyz" or similar. Next, the strength of the haptic feedback (vibration or rumble) can be set. In the list below you can now select new assignments for the individual knobs, keys and sticks. Once all the input options have been reassigned to your liking, click on the blue Done button. The new profile is then in the "Profiles" list. To assign this profile to the controller, click on its entry in the "Controller" list. Next to "Use profile" you can now select the created profile. Note that "All Games" is selected on the left by default. If the new assignment should only apply to a specific app, click on the plus symbol (+) below and add it. Select them, and only then determine the profile.
Do the new settings replace the old mapping apps?
The new remapping settings starting with macOS Ventura can use apps like Joystick mapper or other currently not substitute. Because these Apps are able to add mouse and keyboard capabilities to the controllers as well. Whether double-clicking, scrolling, copying, pasting or key combinations to trigger automations - this can currently only be placed on the buttons and other input options of game controllers with third-party solutions. In the macOS settings, only the gamepad functions can be rearranged, but no new ones can be added. However, this is sufficient for swapping the A and B buttons.
Gamepad remapping on Apple iPhone
In order to be able to reassign the buttons, keys and sticks of the gaming controller on the Apple iPhone, the smartphone must be iOS 16 (or newer). Again, the controller must first be paired via Bluetooth before you can remap the buttons. Depending on the device If this works differently, look at the operating instructions. If you have successfully connected the gamepad and iPhone via Bluetooth, then go to these settings:
1. Opens the Settings on your Apple iPhone
2. Type the point General an

4. Tap under the "Profiles" overview Add profile
5. Tap on the individual points to reassign them
To use the newly created and saved profile, go back to the game controller overview (point 3 of the list). Then tap the controller for which you want to select a different profile. In its settings, tap on “Default Settings” to choose a different profile instead. To set this only for a specific game, you can also set this in the controller settings.
Remap game controllers on Apple iPad
As of iPadOS 16, the settings on the iPad are the same as the iOS settings on the iPhone described above. So you can use that as a guide.
Rearrange gamepad buttons on Apple TV
At least tvOS 16 must be installed in order to be able to equip a controller paired via Bluetooth with the Apple TV with new button assignments. If this is the case and the gamepad has been successfully paired, then proceed as follows:
- Opens the Settings on your Apple TV
- Pick the point General from
- Then open the submenu Remote controls and devices
- Choose in it again Bluetooth from
- Now select the controller and set a new key sorting
Which controllers are compatible with Apple devices?
A wide variety of Bluetooth controllers can now be used with the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV. In the support document HT210414 Apple only names Xbox and PlayStation models, but you can also use "another Bluetooth game controller". For example, you can see the screenshots above for the instructions on Mac and iPhone Pro controller of the Nintendo Switch. Their Joy-Cons can also be connected to Apple devices and used for games. Furthermore, 8BitDo controllers can be used via Bluetooth and cable. So you don't have to limit yourself to one or two models. If you want to use the models mentioned for gaming or for other purposes on Apple devices, you must update them to the latest version of the respective operating system. Because only the latest OS versions are currently supported:
- Apple Mac: macOS 13.2 and newer
- Apple iPhone: iOS 16.3 and newer
- Apple iPad: iPadOS 16.3 and newer
- Apple TV: tvOS 16.3 and later
How can you pair an 8BitDo gamepad with Mac, iPhone and Co.?
Pairing via Bluetooth is currently supported as a wireless connection. To do this, the mode switch on some gamepads must be set to the “D” position. On other controllers, you have to press a specific key or combination of keys. There are illustrated instructions for each process on the manufacturer's website linked above. Is it also possible to connect the 8BitDo controller via USB cable?
The cable connection is only possible with devices that have a USB-C connection. This includes current Mac and iPad models. Currently sold versions of iPhone and Apple TV are not included. In addition, the "SN30 Pro for Android" game controller cannot currently be used with Apple devices via cable (but can be used via Bluetooth).
How many 8BitDo gamepads can you connect to an Apple device?
Up to four game controllers can be paired and used simultaneously for multiplayer games.
Which games are currently supported?
All games from the App Store and games from the Apple Arcade subscription, the MFI-Controller support. (I can imagine that 8BitDo states this for legal reasons, because games and programs from other sources will certainly also be usable with the gamepads.)
Can you remap (remap) the buttons and keys?
That's fine. If you want to remap the individual controls of the 8BitDo controllers, you can do this in the settings on the individual Apple devices - but only after pairing via Bluetooth or cable, before these menu items are not displayed:
- Apple Mac: System Preferences -> Game Controllers
- iPhone / iPad: Settings -> General -> Game Controllers
- Apple TV: Settings -> General -> Remotes and Devices -> Bluetooth
Under macOS (latest version of Ventura), select "Game controllers" in the system settings and click on the plus symbol (+) under the profile overview. This will take you to this list for remapping the controller buttons.

You can also remap the buttons, sticks and buttons of gamepads on the iPhone from the latest iOS version. That's what it looks like.

Can you control the home screen?
This is possible on the iPad and Apple TV. This is not supported on the iPhone.
What restrictions are there?
Currently, when using the 8BitDo game controllers with Apple devices, neither motion control nor vibration (rumble) are available. However, it is possible that these functions will be added with a later update. The same applies to the 2.4G function of the 8BitDo Ultimate 2.4G, which cannot be paired with the offered dongle either (but via Bluetooth and cable).

Developer Ian Page has been offering the for years Mactracker app as a free overview of Apple's devices and systems. The App you can use it on the Mac as well as on the iPhone and iPad. It is also currently completely up-to-date, as Mactracker 7.12.2 for macOS and Mactracker 4.7.2 for iOS and iPadOS were released two days ago. These new versions contain, among other things, information about the devices that Apple has released in recent months. I have summarized what is new for you below.

Mactracker 7.12.2 for the Apple Mac
By far the most reviews for the Mactracker app are filled with praise, giving it 5 stars out of 5. The biggest point of criticism for those who want to criticize something is that the updates for new devices and systems are entered with a time delay. But it's a leisure project, the results of which are offered free of charge - and by a single person. Of course, you can't expect updates to be released as soon as each new Apple product is released. If you want to check out Mactracker for Mac yourself, you can via the Mac App Store. The good thing about it: You don't need a current operating system for this, you can download the app macOS 10.12 Sierra (2016) use. This will certainly remain the case for a long time to come, since the Mactracker app does not have high demands on CPU, GPU and Co. By the way, in the app you can create an overview of your own devices via “My Models”. This not only gives you an overview, but also shows you the warranty status of the individual devices.
In addition to an overview of all possible and long-forgotten Apple devices and systems, you can also create your own list. This allows you to keep an eye on your devices and their status.

Mactracker 4.7.2 for iPhone and iPad
The version for mobile Apple devices also has mostly very good ratings. Here the biggest point of criticism of the people who write a review also consists of the updates, some of which were issued quite late. However, here too, one must be aware that it is not a software development studio that is behind the offer, but an individual who offers both the Mac and mobile versions of the app for free. You can also exercise a bit of patience here. Incidentally, Mactracker can be used on the iPhone and iPad iOS12 (2018) be used - i.e. on partly right old models. The software not only offers you an overview of all previous Apple devices and systems, but also information about the iPhone or iPad on which you use it under "This Device". And there really everything is broken down, from model number and support status to display, memory and RAM to supported file formats and the advertising slogan. You will find the download in the iOS and iPadOS App Store.
You can also access information about all sorts of Apple releases on the iPhone (and iPad). In addition, you can quickly and easily access the information of the device you are holding.
Unable to charge: Liquid has been detected in the Lightning connector
Today, for the first time in years of using an iPhone, I got a warning about water in the Lightning connector (Lightning connector on the bottom of the device). The pop-up says below a warning symbol with water drops: Loading not possible. Liquid has been detected in the Lightning connector. Disconnect the cable to allow the connector to dry. Immediate charging may damage the iPhone. - In order for the iPhone battery to still charge, you must either tap "Ignore (Emergency)" or disconnect the cable and ensure that the iPhone connector and plug are dried. Or what is going on there?
The warning on the Apple iPhone can look like this or something similar if charging is not possible because liquid was detected in the Lightning connector. Here are tips for dealing with this problem.

Disconnect the cable and see if liquid has entered
When I got the warning message this morning, I was pretty sure it must be an error. Because I didn't remember my iPhone getting near liquids. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, I disconnected the cable and unplugged it from the power source. Then I checked it for water and coffee but found nothing. Then I looked at the Lightning Connector of the iPhone. I'm pretty sure there wasn't anything in there either. Except maybe dust, which likes to collect there and in the speaker and microphone holes next to it. So I reconnected the iPhone to the charger, which brought up the liquid warning on the display again. However, this time I decided to ignore them and let the loading process start anyway. Nothing happened, everything works as usual. My first suspicion was that maybe the dust in the Lightning Connector had absorbed a bit of humidity and thus triggered the warning. But I wanted to get to the bottom of the matter and did a little research. As part of this, I came across various pieces of information, which I have summarized for you as follows:
- In any case, the warning must be taken seriously. You should first ignore them and still charge the iPhone via cable if you are sure that there is no liquid in the Lightning connector or on the cable.
- However, it could also be a hardware error. If you are sure that no liquid has penetrated, use a different charging cable (if you have one) as a test. If the error is in the iPhone connection, you should contact Apple Support or an iPhone repair shop.
- It could also be a software bug. To fix this, you can try turning the iPhone off and on again. If you then plug it back in to charge and this time no warning appears, then it can be assumed that it was just a bug. I tried that and after restarting there was no more message.
You can do this to dry the iPhone Lightning Connector
If you see that water has actually gotten into the charging port of the Apple iPhone, or if you are not really sure, then there are definitely measures you can try to dry it. Here are a few tips:
- Disconnects the iPhone from the charging cable or data transfer and also keeps it away from open power sources, cables and plugs.
- Firmly hold the iPhone in a vertical position with the Lightning connector facing down. Now tap with two fingers next to the connector to shake out the water. Alternatively, you can quickly move the iPhone down and then stop to inertially get the water out.
- Leave the iPhone in a well-ventilated place for at least 30 minutes and then try charging again. If the warning then appears again, leave the device in a well-ventilated place for 24 hours.
You should avoid this if you want to dry the iPhone Lightning Connector
I completely understand if you want to get the iPhone connector dry again as soon as possible after the "Cannot charge: Liquid was detected in the Lightning connector..." message. However, you should not take any ill-considered and possibly harmful actions. That can only widen the problem. So keep these points in mind:
- Uses none Hot air or compressed air to dry the iPhone charging port. Both the heat and the pressure can damage it. In the worst case, it is then unusable and must be replaced.
- Plugged nothing into the port to get the water out. Textiles as well as cotton wool and cellulose can leave lint, rags and other residues. Depending on the tool used (cotton swab, etc.), excessive force can also damage or deform the connection.
- Puts the iPhone not in rice or the like. It's one of those internet tricks that someone came up with as a joke. The rice does not pull the water out of the appliance faster. Rather, you risk starch dust getting in and sticking the hardware together, or small pieces of rice causing scratches. With rice and similar “solutions” you tend to only make the problem worse.
I don't have time and need to charge the iPhone quickly!
On the one hand you want the Apple device to remain whole, on the other hand the battery needs to be charged. You can quickly become impatient. As noted above, you should try to tap the water out of the connector and then let the iPhone dry for at least 30 minutes. Then try charging it again with a cable. If you can't explain the warning at all, then reboot and see if it's just a bug. If possible, you can alternatively charge the Apple iPhone wirelessly by using a Qi or MagSafe-Charger used for the charging area on the back of the smartphone.
The liquid warning has been around since the iPhone XS and XR (2018)
When I was looking for information on the subject, I naturally also looked through the support documents that Apple makes available online. I'm doing this on the document HT210424 encountered This notes, among other things, that the liquid warning for the Lightning connector on the Apple iPhone has been around since the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max - i.e. since 2018.
