YouTube vs Ad Blocker: Usage Limits Tested

Google's video hosting website called YouTube is funded by advertising. But that bothers many users who are not responsible for this ad-free premium package pay and still want to get rid of the commercials before, during and after the videos. To hide the annoying elements, they use ad blockers that come as add-ons to the respective Web browser can be added. YouTube also knows this and is now trying to further restrict the use of the ad-blocking program extensions. An example of this: the deactivation of the video player after watching three videos with the ad blocker activated.

Some users see a warning on the YouTube website that they are only allowed to watch three videos and then the video player can no longer be used - unless they deactivate their ad blocker. This is how YouTube wants to secure advertising or premium income. Image source: Reddit

YouTube wants to display ads and punish their removal

Like on Reddit, among others shown been detected, some users for whom the use of ad blockers / ad blocker addons was detected will be shown a new subpage. This states that the video player on the YouTube page will be disabled after three videos. If you don't want that, you should either remove YouTube from the list of sites to be manipulated or deactivate the ad blocker completely. In addition, the free website offer is highlighted, which is only possible through the advertising revenue. If you don't want to see ads and still want to help support YouTubers, you should get a premium account.

Official statement: Functionality is being tested on a few people worldwide

The trade magazine The Verge got to the bottom of the matter, and Google did one on the matter Stellungnahme requested. This confirmed that the request to restrict or deactivate adblock technologies is being tested on users worldwide. It also notes that YouTube is not the only site that detects ad blockers and asks visitors to turn them off. Other companies, organizations, web services, online editions of newspapers and the like do the same. On YouTube, the deactivation of the video player after three videos is supposed to build up a certain amount of pressure. But I think you can cheat a bit with private tabs, removed cookies, etc.

My recommendation: AdBlock Pro for Safari on Mac

"YouTube Premium" subscription: Expensive and linked to a music subscription

YouTube could make it easy for you and offer ad removal for a small fee. However, the "YouTube Premium" subscription currently required for this costs a total of 11,99 euros per month. There is also an annual offer for 119,99 euros for 12 months as well as family and student tariffs. The latter costs EUR 6,99 per month and requires identification as a student. YouTube Premium not only includes the removal of advertising on the website and in the app, but also a music subscription, which certainly not all bookers want. If it were decoupled from the freedom from advertising, then this could be offered more cheaply.

At some point, the advertising on YouTube got on my nerves so much that I also installed an AdBlocker. An ad came every few minutes.

Sir-Apfelot is now one of those websites that I can only read with Tor. The superfluous push message got in the way of the also superfluous cookie message, so I couldn't click away either of them. Both come up every time I read an article.

      Hello Beatrix!
With which device did this happen to you with the two overlays? Mac or iPad/iPhone? I think I'll turn that push thing off. Hardly anyone uses that. LG and thanks for your note! Jens

With Safari 17.0 (Sonoma on MacBook Air) I couldn't click away anything. With Chrome 114 I was able to click away both dialogs.

I recommend New Pipe as an alternative. They are exactly the same videos as on Youtube, without ads and with the possibility of downloading videos for free!

Hello Dieter! NewPipe should not be an alternative for most readers here, since NewPipe is only available for Android. LG, Jens

    1. Hello Dieter! I hardly ever see the cookie window, but you're right. This button is missing. I'll ask the seller how to install it. Sorry for the inconvenience... it will be corrected!
